The Legacy Project's long-term goal is to help you "Do It Yourself" so that all together we can transform the way our world works. Make our story your story by creating your own legacy project. The world needs a stronger base of social capital, of people with thoughtful ideas and the courage to make those ideas a reality. You can be part of a global change to bigger, better, longer term thinking.
All you have to do is take whoever you are, whatever you're about or care about, and make it bigger and better as a legacy project. It's about your life in the context of the people and world around you. As legacy projects grow, they will move us toward a world that's more meaningful, equitable, and sustainable.
Legacy is a rich concept that speaks to the big picture through time. Your life multiplied by time equals legacy. Your legacy evolves through your lifetime, from childhood to older adulthood.
Legacy unites me and we, the struggle between "If I'm not for myself, who will be?" and "If I'm only for myself, what am I?"
Legacy is lived across generations. Through legacy, young and old together can exist in a moment of time that's the grand sum of past, present, and future – and change the world.
We'll show you how to apply the LegacyCubed concept as a life tool and catalyst for social change. We'll provide you with legacy project ideas, resources you can use, and a set of criteria for registering your legacy project and receiving support and global recognition.
We all live our own life story. But often we get stuck in little stories that fail to sustain us or effect real change. Every child, teen, young adult, and older adult, every family, every school, every community group, every organization, even every city can be reframed as a legacy project – looking to the BIG picture over the long term, especially when it comes to important choices. The idea is to translate who you are and what you're about into a legacy project that multiplies what you're already doing and makes it better. Simple – and incredibly powerful.
Legacy DIY will give you plenty of examples, with the LegacyCubed specifics for effective implementation, for making your story a legacy project that can change your life, your community, and our world. Some ideas to get you thinking:
-
An older adult's legacy project might be volunteering to mentor a young person to build literacy skills.
-
A teen's legacy project might be helping an elder sharpen their technology skills.
-
A family's legacy project might be helping grandparents create an ethical will (what the Legacy Project calls a Life Statement) for grandchildren.
-
A family might do a green renovation on their home to help heal the planet for future generations.
-
An elementary school might plant a vegetable garden with the local seniors gardening club to connect with nature and healthy eating.
-
The graduating class in a high school might create a legacy project of buying computers for the school library or raising money to help build a school in Africa.
-
Organizations might create legacy projects that reflect a triple bottom line: financial, social, environmental.
-
Entire cities can move toward legacy community building by adopting bylaws that improve building codes for accessibility through the life course (transgenerational design), allow for multigenerational housing, or create shared sites between schools and retirement communities.
The possibilities are endless – and cumulative. Do It Yourself and put the LegacyCubed concept to work in your
life and our world.
