West Virginia 2010, has chosen as her platform issue "Intergenerational Programs: Keeping A Young Connection." She is working with the Legacy Project
on her platform and will be using the bestseller
A Little Something by Susan V. Bosak.
Young will travel to over 100 schools across West Virginia over the next year speaking about her platform to students. She chose the platform because her family ran a care home when she was growing up and she was surrounded by seniors.
"I remember enjoying the company of the seniors. I would paint the nails of the ladies and do their hair. I'd play checkers with the gentlemen," says Young.
Young wants to encourage children to develop connections with older adults. As part of her presentation, she'll share information about the
Legacy Project's annual Listen to a Life Essay Contest in which students 8-18 years interview an older adult about their life experiences. Each school will also receive a copy of A Little Something, a heartwarming story about love and legacies across generations.
With the $8,000 scholarship she receives for becoming Miss West Virginia, Young hopes to get a degree in nursing administration to help her family run Young's
Care Homes.
The Miss West Virginia Organization and Pageant, an official preliminary to the Miss America Scholarship Program, showcases some of the most talented, educated, and socially aware women of West Virginia. The goal of the organization is to promote the education of young women ages 17-24 who reside in West Virginia by providing educational scholarships at every local pageant and the annual state pageant.
The Legacy Project is a multigenerational education project. Its Across Generations banner program focuses on intergenerational relationships.
