OCTOBER 22, 2004 / Legacy Project / -- You're never too young or too old to be a dreamer says bestselling author Susan V. Bosak. Bosak has teamed with 15 of the top illustrators in the world to create a new gift book titled Dream: A Tale of Wonder, Wisdom & Wishes (TCP Press, hardcover, full color, $17.95). An inspiring celebration of living and dreaming for all ages, the book brings together remarkable original artwork, thought-provoking quotations from throughout history, and a multilayered, resonant story. It also leads the Legacy Project's LifeDreams initiative, offering free activity kits for children and adults, workshops, essay contests, and a traveling multimedia exhibit.

Five years in the making, this one-of-a-kind collaboration has been Bosak's vision from the start. It challenges traditional book boundaries, using the children's picture book format to get to what she calls "essences." From the magical starburst on the cover -- which is like a giftwrapping for the surprises inside -- to the colorful design and the informative endnotes, this is a book that reveals more with each reading.

"I wanted to create a really beautiful, multigenerational book that reaches all ages on different levels," says Bosak. "It's a great book to share with children. It also offers messages adults need to remember too. It gets to the core essences of what's important in living and dreaming. It distills it all down to the basics through art and words that reach both your left and right brain."

The story begins at the end of the rainbow as you open the Dream Chest, a portal between "what is" and "what can be." A wise old star emerges as your guide and beckons, "Dream a dream with me." Readers are then whisked away on a colorful journey of a lifetime. Whoosh through the teddy bears and castles of childhood. Whoosh again into the labyrinths and mountains of adolescence and adulthood. There are stops along the way to meet famous people and explore inventions throughout history. Kids -- of all ages! -- can also hunt in each illustration for a hidden star and make a wish with each one they find.

The story ends with a life-giving dream tree, because "the world at its best is green -- the color of Go and the color of Grow." The old star encourages you to pursue your dreams: "Be a dreamer... dream a dream, your very own dream."

"The world certainly needs practical people," says Bosak. "But it also needs dreamers. It needs people with creativity and courage to try new things and overcome obstacles. That's a hopeful message both children and adults need to hear: go ahead, be a dreamer!"

Once you're inspired by the book, the LifeDreams initiative takes you to the next step. The initiative is part of the Legacy Project, a community service program in partnership with the nonprofit Parenting Coalition and Generations United in Washington, DC. Workshops and a free LifeDreams activity kit include how to work toward a dream using the essential steps of "believe, do, think," ideas for living your dreams and making a difference, and activities, crafts, games, and art projects. Essay contests include inviting children and adults to share their hopes and goals.

A multimedia LifeDreams Exhibit is traveling coast-to-coast over the next three years to museums and libraries. Children and adults will be inspired by famous dreamers and achievers, will delight in viewing all the original works of art created for Dream, and can add their hopes and dreams to the interactive World Dream Chest.

Dream by Susan V. Bosak is available in bookstores across the country. For more information, the free online LifeDreams activity kit, and contest and exhibit details, visit www.dreamstorybook.com.
