A shaft of sunlight beams through
the towering trees. The calls
of birds echo as leaves rustle in the wind. A fish glides silently through the
clear water. A meandering walk offers clarity. An idea ignites your imagination. A new perspective challenges your thinking. Welcome to the Legacy Center.
In a world of "too much, too big, too fast," the Legacy Center offers a moment to reflect and rejuvenate. In keeping with the Legacy Project's goals, it will celebrate and explore who we are, where we've come from, and where we're going as individuals and as communities. Attracting visitors from across the continent, the Legacy Center's programs and workshops for all ages will offer an opportunity to "Connect to What Matters in Your Past, Present, and Future." Not only will the Legacy Center touch the lives of those who are able to visit it, but also a much wider audience through the associated books, CDs, and videos.
There is an old Native American saying, "The truest meaning of a life is to plant seeds to grow in springs you will not see." Forty years ago, on a 15-acre site nestled in the gently rolling hills near Toronto, Canada, a man planted the seeds to create a very special legacy. That legacy is now being carried forward for children and adults to enjoy today, and for generations to enjoy tomorrow.
Over the decades, more than a hundred specimen-quality trees have flourished in the arboretum. A lush, 50-foot Cedar hedge frames the grounds. A Maple forest dotted with Trilliums in the Spring and bursting with reds and golds in the Fall fills one corner. A large, spring-fed pond teaming with fish, birds, and water plants is cradled in another corner. Three islands are linked with walking bridges.
This unique site is home to the Legacy Center, which is receiving international attention as an inspiring educational environment and a demonstration project. It will be the focal point of the activities of the Legacy Project, and will include a library, exhibit gallery, and a soul-satisfying workshop and meeting space with gorgeous views of the grounds. Educational workshops on a variety of legacy-related topics will be available for individuals, groups, and organizations.
The Legacy Center arboretum will be a place for environmental and renewable energy research and education. Guided Tree Walks will offer guests a chance to relax and enjoy nature, to learn about the environment, and to explore the idea of trees as a metaphor for the life course and intergenerational connections.
Through what it is and what it stands for, the Legacy Center will not only celebrate the legacy of ideas, but environmental legacy as well both natural and manmade. The grounds and building will embody the best thinking on environmental and design issues. The Legacy Center will feature innovative products and practices that enhance living now, while respecting and learning from what has come before and creating lasting and real value for future generations.
