The Readers Showcase

While How to Build the Grandma Connection gives you practical INFORMATION, Something to Remember Me By is in many ways a companion book that gives you INSPIRATION. Says one reviewer, "Something to Remember Me By has the emotion of Love You Forever, the inspiration of Chicken Soup for the Soul, and the charm of a Norman Rockwell painting."

It's a seemingly simple 32-page storybook that has touched the hearts of children and adults across the country. A bestselling gift book for children, grandchildren, mothers and grandmothers! It's also won 6 national awards.

The book has inspired the national Something to Remember Me By Legacy Project (which offers free activity kits, contests, workshops, and more to bring generations closer together). And Lane Furniture has just released the beautiful new heirloom-quality Something to Remember Me By Cedar Chest based on the chest in the book.

Something to Remember Me By is a story about love and legacies across generations. It begins as a little girl and her grandmother share special times filled with "big warm smiles, and warm snuggly hugs." Many visits end with the grandmother's familiar words, "I want to give you something to remember me by." Then she gives her granddaughter a small keepsake. As the years pass, the keepsakes fill a cedar chest with memories, and it becomes clear that one gift is most precious of all -- the gift of love.

The heartwarming story is beautifully complemented by the richly-detailed, golden watercolor illustrations of award-winning artist Laurie McGaw.

The new Keepsake Edition has just been released -- a special gift book for children, grandchildren, mothers, and grandmothers. It's a way to say "I love you." Many grandparents give the book as a gift to each of their grandchildren, often with a personal keepsake or photograph. It's also a perfect gift for new grandmothers.

Letters, calls, faxes, and stories about Something to Remember Me By have poured in from across the country. Here's a sample:

A woman in New York explained to author Susan Bosak that she had lost her mother and grandmother in the holocaust. She wanted to give her 14-year-old granddaughter a copy of Something to Remember Me By, with some old photos and her grandmother's handkerchief -- the only keepsake she had left -- so that her granddaughter would remember them all.

A Florida grandmother picked up the book in her local bookstore, began reading it, and started crying where she stood. She took a seat, read the book through, and cried some more. It reminded her of her grandmother, and her two young granddaughters -- 18 months and 3 years -- who live far away. "Right there in the bookstore," wrote the woman, "I made a promise to myself to do everything I can to have a close relationship with my grandkids, to give them something to remember me by."

An 8-year-old girl in Boston insisted she has the "best grandma in the whole world!" She showed Susan the collage of photos she had made to give her grandma with a copy of the book. The photos were of things they had done together, like visiting the zoo and playing dress-up.

One woman in Atlanta gave the book to her "grammy" as a way to thank her for everything she had done over the years. "I never had the words before to say how I felt."

The all-time record for a purchase by a single person is held by a woman in San Antonio, TX. She bought 15 copies -- to give to all her young grandchildren, her grown children, a great aunt, and some friends. "This book says what's in my heart," the woman told Susan.

All About Kids

When bestselling author and educator Susan V. Bosak runs workshops with grandparents and grandchildren, she's found science activities to be an effective, fun way to bridge the generation gap. You're never too young or too old to explore the wonders of the world around you, to enjoy that "Hey, wow!" feeling of discovery.

Doing science activities with your grandchildren is also an important way for you to contribute to their education (you can even help with science fair projects!). Scientific information and thinking skills are critical as we enter the 21st century. Unfortunately, many children get "turned off" science because there isn't an interested adult encouraging them in this area. You can make a big difference -- and maybe even learn a little something yourself along the way!

Science Is... is filled with over 450 activities, projects, games, puzzles, and stories for children 6 to 14 years old. You don't need any background in science, and you can use readily-available, inexpensive materials around your house. Most of the time you'll be having so much fun that you won't believe you're doing "science." Learn how to make gigantic bubbles or a mini volcano; build amazing rockets and paper airplanes; put on a play that shows what happens to a hamburger when you swallow it; go stargazing; do a bee dance.

Just updated, this award-winning book covers all areas of science -- the human body, the environment, rocks, plants, animals, insects, weather, stars and planets, energy, and technology. Activities range in length from the popular Quickies to projects you can do over several days or weeks. Easy-to-follow explanations, engaging cartoons, and fun facts -- did you know that a cockroach can live for nine days without its head? -- make this a book you'll turn to again and again. It's an incredible value!
